Writing Skills

Most of us have to write every day: e-mails, letters, memos, reports, analyses, project summaries, product descriptions - the list goes on. But how many of us feel confident in our ability to get messages across effectively? Do we always think about what we're going to write and the best way to communicate to our target audience? Those who don't get their message across in the right way or make obvious errors in their writing are at a disadvantage. This topic will help you ensure that your writing is not only read, but is fully understood as you intended.

This course focuses on how to harness the power of the written word. It will equip you with the tools and the confidence to produce convincing, persuasive and powerful documents that help you to achieve your objectives.

On the course you will cover the accepted rules of writing in plain and professional English; learning how to avoid the most common mistakes in punctuation, spelling and grammar, and how to keep your documents succinct and focused on the needs of the reader – rather than the writer. You will use various techniques to organise your key ideas and topics and ensure that your documents follow a logical flow and structure. You will also learn how to use persuasive writing to motivate your readers to take action. Throughout the course your learning will be supported through guided practice; written and oral exercises, analysis of different kinds of writing and examples of business documents.

This course is aimed at anyone whose work requires them to produce professional written communications and who wants to improve their accuracy, develop their writing style and sharpen their impact.

By the end of this course you will be able to:

  • Follow the rules of grammar that matter, knowing which are obligatory, optional or defunct
  • Get your point across clearly, using plain and professional English
  • Use the appropriate vocabulary, style and tone to satisfy your reader‘s needs and expectations
  • Follow a logical structure and sequence when producing written documents
  • Edit and proofread to eliminate errors and streamline content

  • The most misunderstood punctuation marks and how to use them properly; using punctuation to optimise clarity and brevity
  • The most commonly misspelt and misused words, spelling rules, exceptions and pitfalls
  • Building sentences and paragraphs that guide your reader through the document and give your writing rhythm and pace
  • The virtues of simplicity and the principles of ‘plain English‘
  • Selecting a style and tone that is appropriate to the audience and the content
  • Planning your document and structuring the key points into a logical flow
  • Editing and streamlining your writing for maximum readability

You’ve probably heard people say good writing is important, but why does it really matter?
Think about what can happen if a document is poorly written. For example, what if using too many words hides your key points and your readers can’t figure out what you need?
The written work you produce should make you stand out in a positive way. Your writing is a reflection of both you and your organization. Done well, it can open new doors for you, help you achieve your goals, build your networks, and advance your career.
Effective writing starts with planning. This is a key step we often overlook during a busy working day. Asking yourself a few simple questions before writing will help ensure your written message is received, understood, accepted, and acted upon in the way you intend.
In this course, you’ll learn to get your points across clearly. You’ll find out how to use concise language to make your writing more readable and compelling. We’ll also show you how choosing the appropriate words, style, and tone for your audience will improve your communication.
Finally, you’ll learn how to organize your writing by using simple structures that create a logical flow, hold your readers’ attention, and increase their understanding.

  • Do you regularly need to produce written documents that are clear, concise, and professional?

  • Have you ever produced writing that readers have misunderstood?

  • In your writing, do you tend to use many words when a few would be enough? Or the opposite?

  • Have you ever wasted time trying to work out how to start a written document, and how to conclude it?

By the end of this session you will be able to:

  • Get your points across clearly by using concise language
  • Use the appropriate vocabulary, style, and tone to satisfy your readers’ needs and expectations
  • Organize your writing by using accepted structures
