5 Steps to consider: Boosting retention, engagement & performance with L&D
If you are a Head of L&D, Chief Learning Officers (CLOs), and HR leader, and want to drive retention, engagement, and performance through learning, here are 5 key things to consider.
Linking L&D to measurable business goals ensures relevance and impact. Define clear learning outcomes tied to KPIs. Focus on critical skills and capabilities, prioritising human skills.
Learners stay engaged when they see the value in the learning. Use data to segment learners by career stage, role, or goals. Offer engaging, modular and flexible learning journeys - self-paced, expert-led or blended, ensuring experiences caters for different learning styles and fit in the flow of work.
Adults learn best through experience, reflection, and application in real-world settings. Integrate coaching, peer learning, and live workshops into programmes, and use real case scenarios, simulations, and group challenges. Design learning around day-to-day work, not separate from it.
Managers are pivotal in shaping employee experience, engagement, and development. Make manager development a priority and train managers in core people leadership skills: feedback, coaching, inclusive leadership and growing talent. Provide toolkits and nudges to support day-to-day behaviour change.
Continuous improvement ensures learning drives performance and justifies investment. Track engagement, completion, and feedback—but go beyond that (aligning back to ‘define clear learning outcomes’) - link learning participation to performance metrics (e.g., retention rates, team productivity). Use pulse surveys, 360s, and manager assessments to capture behavioural change and business impact.
