We used to consider intelligence and emotions as being opposites, however it is now widely recognised that the two are interlocked, and that in fact, emotions have a greater influence on how we behave and make decisions than rational thought.

Emotional intelligence (EI or EQ) has also been shown to play a meaningful role in mental and physical health, and can contribute greatly to an individual’s success in both their personal and professional lives.

Developing your EI is essential to developing meaningful human relationships, including the relationship you have with yourself and the ones you have with others. In order to realise your true potential, you need the ability to understand and manage your emotions, and to gain insight into the emotional state of others. So whether it be improving interpersonal communication, strengthening social relationships, dealing with stress, boosting resilience, or aligning colleagues behind a vision - emotional intelligence plays a central role.

This three hour virtual course will help you to understand what emotional intelligence is and why it is such a critical skill in the modern workplace. You will explore the four pillars of EI and some of the key skills that support them: including recognising and managing your own emotions, changing your instinctive response to events, demonstrating empathy, and building rapport with others through effective verbal and nonverbal communication.

If you want to obtain a grounding in Emotional Intelligence and learn how to apply it both to your work and personal relationships, then this is a chance to learn and practise the associated skills and techniques in a supportive and safe environment.

By the end of this course you will be able to:

  • Explain where emotions come from and how they influence our behaviour
  • Evaluate the values and beliefs that trigger an emotional response
  • Apply techniques to positively manage emotional responses
  • Interpret other people’ emotions and respond appropriately
  • Identify the different social styles and the impact they have on relationship building
  • Use communication skills to build rapport and demonstrate empathy
  • Defining characteristics of high and low EI and how these traits impact on performance and success
  • Understanding and assessing emotions without judgement
  • Exploring the role of emotions at work and how they can help or hinder performance
  • Recognising your personal emotional triggers
  • Assessing your values and their impact on your emotional response
  • Reframing perceptions to see situations and events in a different light
  • Identifying positive techniques to manage a disruptive emotional response
  • The role of mindfulness
  • How to use verbal and nonverbal communication to increase social awareness
  • Building empathy and rapport with a range of people
  • Reading and interpreting non-verbal language
  • How to match your own communication to the needs of others
  • Understanding different behavioural styles, motivations and triggers
  • Using perceptual positions at resolve a conflict or improve a relationship
