We all live in a world that is often described using the acronym VUCA: Volatile, Uncertain, Complex, and Ambiguous.

This acronym reflects that we live in a world of fast change and information overload. The term was first introduced in 1991 by the U.S. Army as a result of the extreme conditions in Afghanistan and Iraq. These conditions were totally new and totally changed the nature of warfare. Unsurprisingly, today’s business environment has changed in a very similar way. Like warfare, business in the 21st century will never be the same again. 20th-century rules, economics, and dynamics have become obsolete and will continue to change.

The impact of living in a VUCA world

This has an impact on organisations and industries in terms of changing strategy in response to a changing environment. But living in a VUCA world can also have a huge impact on individuals – increasing levels of stress, anxiety, and ill-health - unless we develop the skills and the mindsets that enable us to cope, adapt, and ultimately to thrive.

There are physical, emotional, and mental elements to improving individual wellbeing, all of which involve becoming more self-aware, self-confident, and self-sufficient.

Self-awareness is using evaluation and reflection to become more conscious of our emotions as we experience them, what triggers negative or disruptive emotions, and our individual strengths and weaknesses.

Self-confidence is trusting in our own abilities, capacities and judgments, and developing the belief that we can successfully face the day to day challenges and demands that life throws at us.

Self-sufficiency is developing the internal resources to provide our own solutions, applying the skills and strategies that we have learned at the right time and in the right way.

In 2018/19 stress, depression or anxiety accounted for 44% of all work-related ill health cases in the UK and 54% of all working days lost due to ill health.

In 2019, 94% of American workers report experiencing stress at their workplace, and 63% are ready to quit their jobs due to stress.

Everyone who has ever held a job has, at some point, felt the pressure of work-related stress. Even the most enjoyable and fulfilling job can have stressful elements. In the short-term, a little bit of stress can help people to stay focused, energetic, and motivated to tackle new challenges. It’s what keeps people on their toes during a presentation, alert to hazards and mistakes, and striving to meet deadlines.

But in today’s hectic world, long hours, tight deadlines, and ever-increasing demands can lead to overwhelming feelings of worry and anxiety. And when stress becomes chronic and exceeds a person’s ability to cope, it stops being helpful and becomes harmful to both physical and emotional health.

Managers and organisations, therefore, need to be alert to the signs and symptoms of harmful stress and to have strategies in place to protect workers from becoming burned out and developing mental health issues. Equally, each individual should take responsibility for managing their own stress levels and for responding to high-stress situations appropriately – making positive health choices, establishing boundaries between work and home, taking time to recharge, practising relaxation and mindfulness – and most importantly, seeking help and support when things threaten to become too much.
